Suggested Shoulder Rests and Chin Rests
Making sure that you have a comfortable and natural set-up is one of my top priorities as your violin teacher. Sometimes this means trying many different combinations of shoulder rests and chin rests.
This is my go-to shoulder rest for most beginning violin students.
The Mach One shoulder rest with a leather strap is a good match for teenage students with a little bit longer necks or who are used to a pretty high shoulder rest. The leather strap provides some freedom of movement.
This is the shoulder rest I use, and I really love it. For reference, I am average height.
The Everest Shoulder rest may be right for you, make sure you order the right size for whatever you decide to try.
Sometimes a shoulder pad is all you need!
I am a huge fan of center-mounted chinrests especially if the student is average height or shorter. You may have to try a few center-mounted chin rests to find the one that fits your jaw the best. Make sure you order the correct size for your violin. (4/4, 3/4 etc.) I do not recommend Wittner, because the big plastic legs can be uncomfortable for many students.
Something like this can really help if you are having discomfort from the violin touching your jaw or neck. This cushions things a little bit.
